Obituary for Preston Lee Metcalf

Preston Lee Metcalf, 83, a native of Mars Hill, NC went home to Heaven Saturday August 1st. He was a devoted husband of almost 59 years to wife Susie Metcalf and the kind of Father that all children wish for to his two daughters; Dana Shelton and Kaye Tefel, her husband Tim Tucker and Rocky and Karen Cunningham. He also had plenty of love to share with granddaughter Jasmine Shelton, and her boyfriend Tony who held an especially close place in his heart. He was a graduate of Blanton's Business College and retired from Sears. Many people remember him from the Garden Department at Sears and from his own garden at home, a garden that he shared with anyone, family and strangers alike. Even one gentleman that he caught stealing collard greens one day and he said to him... “Hang on and I will get you a bag to put those in”.. And he did!

His legacy is one of strong Christian faith, strong work ethic, steady family provider, and most of all love. He loved good worship music and between his guitar and harmonicas raised a joyful noise to the Lord, right up to his last day. To say he will be missed sounds too shallow for the man he was, so I would rather say all of us who had the privilege to be in his family or be friends with him will strive to live in a way that honors the example he set.

Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday August 8th at Blue Ridge Funeral Service 7626 NC Highway 213, Mars Hill, NC at 11:30am and the family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:30 prior to the service. Reverends Weldon Ramsey, Mickey Church and Dean Metcalf will conduct the service. Burial will follow in the Brigman-McPeters Cemetery.
