Robert "Bobby"  Capps Sr.
Mr. Robert “Bobby” Glenn Capps, 72, of Mars Hill passed away on Friday, December 23rd, 2016. Bobby was born on February 7th, 1944 to the late Dewey “Bud” and Treca McElrath Capps in Cleveland, Ohio. Bobby graduated from Enka High School and later The Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science where he earned an associates degree in Mortuary Science. In 1972 he founded Capps Funeral Home in Mars Hill and later, along with his wife Becky, moved that business to it’s new location under the name of Blue Ridge Funeral Service and Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel. Bobby practiced funeral service for over 50 years. He was very community minded and loved the people of Madison County, North Carolina serving one term as County Commissioner. During that term he lobbied heavily for construction of the field house at O.E. Roberts Stadium at Madison High School as well as the softball and baseball complex where the student athletes currently play. Youth League athletics was a passion of his and he spent countless hours on the sidelines and practice fields in the county. Bobby was a Master Mason and member of Bald Creek Lodge #397 AF & AM. He was a member of Mt. Sheba Baptist Church. Bobby’s favorite pastime was simply watching sports of any kind, college or pro, and he enjoyed the thrill of sport. In his retirement Bobby and his wife Becky spent their spare time in Bean Station, Tennessee at their lake house which was a lifelong dream of his. In addition to his parents Bobby was preceded in death by his son: Robbie Capps after which the Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service is named.
Bobby is survived by his loving and devoted wife: Rebecca, “Becky” Moss Capps of their home; two sons: Tim Capps and his wife Katherine of Mars Hill and Todd Capps of Salem, SC. one daughter: Sabrina Griffin Hill and her husband Stacy of Weaverville; five grandchildren: Ella, Anna, and Emery Capps and Bryson and Coleman Allen; one brother: Billy Capps and wife Karen of Flat Rock, NC; one niece: Kristin Capps and one nephew: Andrew “Drew” Capps; three aunts: Anna Mae Coward, Adaleen Gahagan, and Christine Medford: and several cousins.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 27th, 2016 at Mars Hill Baptist Church with the Reverends Steve Rhinehart, Bud Marlor, Ron Dodson and Dr. Tommy Justus officiating. Serving as Active pallbearers are: Owen Edwards, Eddie Fox, Dwight Fender, Donald Adams, Waylon Capps, Danny Hensley and Rodney Craig. Serving as Honorary pallbearers as follows: Neal Willis, Woody Ammons, Roger Hubbard, and Parker Cody. Entombment will follow and will be private. The Capps family will receive friends from 4-8:00pm on Monday, December 26th, 2016, at Blue Ridge Funeral Service in Mars Hill.
