Condolence: Sincere condolences to Mr. Phillip's family. He was a wonderful teacher, one of my favorites! I can still hear him say, "well folks" and see the twinkle in his eyes! His face would light up when we would grasp an idea or concept! He was one of a kind! The world is a little dimmer with his passing. But oh the heavens, they rejoice!

Condolence From: Gary Roberts
Condolence: Gary and I graduated from Mars Hill High School together. The only class I SPECIFICALLY remember with him was PHYSICS! We were a small group of guys with an eccentric teacher. I can’t say I got physics in that class, but obviously, Gary got it and learned how to teach it in a way that made his students relish the opportunity to learn and then go out and make significant contributions with their lives. Student testimonies make me wish I could have taken physics from him. After HS and college I went to DC to work and lost touch with him. My life would have been richer if I had shared some of the past 50 years with Gary.

Condolence From: Chris Roberts
Condolence: I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. Mr. Phillips was my all time favorite teacher. I made sure to take every class I could with him and he truly opened my mind to the wonders of learning whether it was physics, geometry, or computer science. Now I work in an architectural firm and I use a great deal of what he taught me. I still regularly tell stories about my time in his class even though that was 28 year ago. You could tell he loved what he did and how much he cared for his students. Because of that we loved him. He used to have a stamp that he would use when one of his students turned in a assignment or test answers where they clearly were trying to cover up that they had no idea. The stamp said "BULL". He used to say "give me more answers like those and I'll have to give you the other half of the stamp." At the end of my senior year at North Buncombe, I had him sign my yearbook and right beside his signature is the stamp "BULL". I'll never forget him or what he did for me. Rest In Peace.

Condolence From: Jason Gladin
Condolence: I remember him as my favorite teacher at NBHS, he taught me so much that help later in life as a paramedic, all the Newton laws. I remember how he always greeted the class with a wave and "Hello", or "Today I'm going to give you an opportunity to be successful, or not." Follows by a pop quiz. He was an amazing person, how made science come to life, not just theory. God bless him for the lesson in life he taught. My prayers will be with the family, I am truly saddened by the news.

Condolence: We love you cousins! Our thoughts are with you. We are saddened by this news... Gary was a kind man who once loaned me a fiddle until I could get my own... He showed me how to tune in up and off I went. Alas, I never did master the instrument... but I have never forgotten Gary helping me out like he did. I'll never forget that brief time when your mom watched us over at y'alls house and how much fun we had crushing rocks and playing in the woods.

Condolence: Mr. Phillips was my physics teacher between 1994 and 1998. He showed me that not all smart people are "dorky". He showed me that some smart people are actually down to earth, good ol people. Mr. Phillips is the smartest man I have known. I have never, in 36 years of life, been able to find someone with more sense than he had. I am saddened by his death, but know, beyond any doubt, that he touched many lives with his personality and teachings.

Condolence From: Alan King
Condolence: I had Mr. Phillips for two classes in high school. He had a special talent for teaching and created an atmosphere where students wanted to learn. I remember him once saying that more students took Physics at North Buncombe than the rest of the county schools combined....and he didn't say that to brag about himself - he said it to brag on the students who came to class to learn and left with understanding. That was his focus. I'm proud to have known Mr. Phillips. I am sad to hear he is gone.
